Young Harris College invites applications for a full-time Planetarium Director beginning Summer 2022. The director manages the activities of the planetarium including the production, scheduling and presentation of planetarium shows, and is also responsible for the maintenance and use of the Young Harris College Observatory. The successful applicant will possess a Masters or PhD degree in Astronomy and have experience in planetarium operations. This is a 12-month Teaching Staff position that will require developing and presenting weekday educational shows to area schoolchildren and community groups, as well as planetarium shows and observing sessions for the public at large on selected evenings. Teaching one class in astronomy or related discipline per semester will be included in the responsibilities of the position. Oversite of equipment maintenance is also expected as is budget management for the planetarium operation.

The O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium opened in 1979 and comfortably seats 104 under a 40-ft. dome. In 2002, a state-of-the-art GOTO Chronos Space Simulator star projector was installed, the first of the Chronos model anywhere in the world. A Sky-Skan Definiti full-dome digital projection system was later added. The YHC Observatory is located about 1.5 miles from campus at an elevation of more than 2,000 feet and features a Schmidt Cassegrain telescope housed in a 15-foot dome. This facility benefits not only from its high elevation but also from the wonderfully dark skies of northern Georgia.
