The Southeastern Planetarium Association is proud to produce the planetarium show, "The Planets." It's an exciting tour of the Solar System that looks at each planet as well as Solar System formation and extra-solar planets. It was written by Jon Bell, narrated by Kate Mulgrew (of Star Trek: Voyager), music by Jonn Serrie, and animations by Allen Davis. Make sure you check out the sample images from the show.
The 36 minute show includes both a Spring and a Fall star-I.D. where constellations and the locations of extra-solar planets are pointed out. The content provided is designed for a slide-based theater. There are also Spring and Fall versions for portable domes where a presenter may only have a single image source such as a small data projector. These latter versions have most of the visual assets combined into a single video asset. You can modify the show by adding or subtracting images or effects to meet your theater's needs. In the near future, there will also be a full-dome version made from the original assets. Once completed, the planetarium community will be notified.
The show includes many digital extras. Such as:
- Four variations of the video component on DVD.
- All slide images and pans in large format, including masks.
- All the audio is uncompressed, including walk-in, walk- out, and two PSAs.
- Video asset of a one minute trailer with a five second section where you can add your own logo and then use on your website and/or for PR.
- Huge image for lobby poster with space to add your facility name.
- Fully annotated script.
- Slide list.
- Finder charts for extra-solar planets to point out.
You may be wondering how you can get this show for your facility. It's simple. If you are a current SEPA member, you can get the program free. Just contact Mickey Jo Sorrell, SEPA Secretary/Treasurer, for the program. There is a limit of one per facility/organization. Also, you must sign and mail in the original license before you can receive the show packet. The show will then be sent to you. If you are not a current SEPA member, then under this special time period ending December 31, 2007, you can join SEPA and get the show free. Starting January 1, 2008, any planetarian can get the show for $50 for their facility.
This is SEPA's way of providing a valuable resource for planetarians. We hope you enjoy the show as well as use it for years to come.
Thank you,
SEPA Council

Note, all images except Saturn Rings Pan copyright Bays Mountain Planetarium; Saturn Rings Pan copyright Morehead PlanetariumFrom the video
- Solar Nebula This sequence used dozens of layers to create the effect of depth.

- Earth w/ Aurora A beautiful scene where the aurora dance about the magnetic pole at the same time as the lighting changes on earth.

- Jupiter Impact A very accurate scene where we see the impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter from the perspective of the comet's trajectory origin. Notice the comet's outgassing.

- Saturn Fly over the ringed planet and clearly witness the spokes on the ring system. Notice the correct shadow angle and the shadow of the rings on the planet itself.

- Titan with Huygens See the probe, Huygens, careen towards the veiled moon of Saturn while also detecting subtle details on Titan's surface.

- Comet Both large and small gas/dust particles stream from the nucleus as the solar wind carries the material away from their source.

Pans
- Saturn Rings Pan Look edge-on towards Saturn and through the ring system to see that it is made of large and tiny particles.

- Pan Modern Scene Feel at home with this panorama that represents current life on earth.

- Pan Modern Scene mask An example of a mask for the slide-based imagery. Look Ma, no opaqueing fluid!
