2009 Conference
Greetings All,
I wanted you to know about the 2009 SEPA conference. There has been a change due to unforeseen circumstances. The original selection was for a multi-regional meeting to be held in Baton Rouge, LA in October of 2009. Unfortunately, the support for such a meeting from many of the other regionals fell through at the last minute. This was unexpected. No blame is being placed at all towards any regional nor any of its members. Democracy allows an organization's members the right to make their choices heard. The timing for this special meeting just didn't work out. I also want to thank Jon Elvert for his work in trying to make this 7-regional meeting a reality. His coworkers were saddened, but understanding. They are still desirous of hosting this special meeting in the future.
Upon this change of events, a new conference host was needed. It was known half a year before the 2007 Triple Conference that the Sudekum Planetarium in Nashville, TN was wanting to make a bid for the 2009 conference. Because of this and since they will have a new facility at that time, SEPA Council has agreed to allow the Sudekum Planetarium to host the 2009 conference. It will be held in the third or fourth week of June. Kris McCall and Drew Gilmore have let me know that they have a preliminary schedule in place and they will be locking in the final dates very soon. I want to thank the staff at the Adventure Science Center, especially those working in the Sudekum Planetarium, for stepping up to this challenge. I know they are very busy in their final stages of construction of their beautiful, new, state-of-the-art theater. They plan on opening to the public in Summer, 2008. I know they will host a memorable conference for the SEPA membership.
Speaking of conferences, Dave Hostetter and the staff at the Lafayette Natural History Museum & Planetarium in Lafayette, LA are very busy working on their final plans for the 2008 conference. It will be held on July 22-26. Please note that it is in July, not June. The IPS conference is being held during our normal time slot, so SEPA is having theirs a few weeks later.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Will see you in Lafayette!
Adam Thanz
SEPA President
